In roulette, outside bets are the most common type of wagers, along with inside bets. Most of these have simple rules and allow players to bet on many numbers as opposed to just one.
If you have more questions about outside bets in roulette, this article is all you need: it explains what an outside bet means, which ones are the top ones, and some proven tactics for roulette.
Explaining the Summary of Roulette Outside Bets
We will go over all outside bets in roulette, the requirements for winning, the odds of each bet, and what you receive as a payout with both versions of roulette:
We will go over these different outside bets, along with useful strategies, below.
Remember, you can apply all the things you know about roulette in online, mobile, and land casino environments.
What Exactly Is an Outside Bet in a Game of Roulette?
These bets are made in roulette outside the center area of the table. You can notice that the first two betting spots outside the table are outside bets.
- Low/High
- Red/Black
- Odd/Even
- Dozens
When you place an outside bet in roulette, you choose a collection of numbers, but an inside bet targets just one number. You will rarely win big with outside bets, but you’ll have a chance to win more times!
Different Types of Outside Bets in Roulette
We should now focus on the different roulette outside bets that you have the option to make!
Low/High
The boxes on the roulette table that say “1 to 18” are for low bets, and the ones that say “19 to 36” are for high bets. When you make a low bet, you choose numbers from 1 to 18 and if you make a high bet, you choose the numbers from 19 to 36. To win the lottery, you have to match 18 numbers.
If the number on the wheel is one zero or double zero, you lose. This is true for all the outside bets in roulette. There is only one change that occurs in French roulette with La Partage rules, as I will discuss more in the Roulette Outside Bet Strategy.
Red/Black
Roulette tables place the red and black bets under the “2nd 12” area. You only need to guess the color, and if you win, you are the winner! Just like low/high, there are 18 numbers involved, and for each bet.
Odd/Even
When you bet on online roulette, you pick whether the result will be odd or even. They will be in the boxes on the table labeled “EVEN” and “ODD”. You have now received another group of 18 numbers to choose from, and your winnings and odds are still the same as the low/high and red/black bets.
Dozens
This set is called “1st 12” and it comes with numbers 1-12. The box called “2nd 12” actually represents the numbers 13-24. Then, we have the third box, which is labeled “3rd 12,” and the numbers in it run from 25 to 36.
A “1st 12” bet means you bet on numbers 1 through 12, and you need the ball to land on one of these to win. With this bet, the odds of winning and the sizes of payouts differ a little from the first three bets I explained. Even so, the payout jumps up to 2:1.
There is an Outside Bet Strategy for Roulette.
Your best option for outside bets is to play French Roulette at tables using La Partage and En Prison rules for the bets placed on odd/even, red/black, and high/low spots. Certain European roulette tables offer these props, but not all of them. If you roll a seven or a zero in Roulette, you will lose just half your bet rather than the whole bet.
You can find the En Prison rule in French roulette as well. So, if you land on zero, your money will be held over for the following spin. If you win after you bet, you’ll get your stake back. Losing your bet means that you lose your wager. On the whole, European roulette gives you a better chance when betting on the table’s outside categories.

Are Roulette Outside Bets Useful for Gambling?
You should choose roulette outside bets if you prefer to gain small victories regularly. The house advantage is not much different for either inside or outside bets, yet your chances of winning are far greater for outside bets.
The money you earn from outside bets is less than what roulette inside bets usually give, but outside bets win less frequently. It depends on your choice, as you should know that the house edge on outside bets with even money is reduced when playing French roulette.
